Improvements!

Oct 4th, 2008 | By Ais | Category: News

This week, I’m moving all of my websites to a better hosting service,  Hostgator.

Right away,  you’ll probably notice that the pages load faster.  The site will be able to handle the increasing demand, as Sites that Soar! grows in popularity, too.

But, during this transition, there will be some obvious “growing pains.”  Images may not show up with some posts.  A few articles and comments may have typos.  And so on.

I’m restoring my websites — including this one — with files as quickly as I can, and still keep running my other businesses.  (I’m moving over 30 websites, and one of them has more than 5000 individual files.)

Meanwhile, I appreciate your patience while I get everything back to normal here.

Note: I’d previously recommended Websitesource.  Well, after one of my sites was down for over four days, I realized that Websitesource’s tech support wasn’t as good as I needed.

Since moving to Hostgator, I regret that I waited so long to move.  Everything at Hostgator runs better, faster, and with more features and services… by a lot.  If you choose Hostgator, use the coupon code “wordpress” (or look up their newest coupons at Google) and get the first month’s hosting for one cent.

  1. Hey!

    In your 2.7 book, you may want to put the category revealing tricks from page 38 BEFORE you discuss categories (Tab Contents) on page 33. That would have saved me two hours of brain damage and begging on Twitter tonight.

    Thanks!

  2. Hi Thubten,

    Thanks for your comments. I’ll keep them in mind for the 2.7 ebook.

    I’d figured that anyone who was looking for their category numbers would look in the book, on the Table of Contents page, and see “Finding your category numbers… page 38″ directing people to page 38 for that information.

    Alternatively, people visit this website and search on either “category” or “ID” and find the answer there.

    I’m sorry that it took you two hours to try at least one of those options.

  3. In your book you have the following on P. 42

    1. Open the file called header.php in wp-content > themes > branfordmagazine
    2. In your theme’s header.php, scroll down to see this code:

    <?php
    // enter the IDs of which categories you want to display
    $display_categories = array(3,4,5,6);

    In my header.php file “rightcol” is not found. Does it go by any other name?
    I have not upgraded Brantford and shall not, am running WP 2.7

  4. Sorry to mess up your comments area, I can see that the correct file to open is index.php, not header.php

  5. Thanks for the info. I’ll double-check that typo in the new edition of the book.
